Laura's decorating philosophy is all about taking your time and making sure the space feels right. Here’s her top advice for first-time decorators!
I Love Wallpaper: For someone embarking on their first major decorating project, what’s the most crucial piece of advice you can offer?
Laura Hamilton: Take your time and don’t rush into decisions. Live in the space a bit, understand the light, and figure out how you want to feel in each room. And always test paint and wallpaper samples on the wall, things look very different in real life and different light compared to online! Prep is key. If you take your time with the prep, the finish of the final product will be so much better.
I Love Wallpaper: When it comes to choosing wallpaper, what’s your process? How do you ensure it complements the existing decor or sets a new tone for the room?
Laura Hamilton: I always start with how I want the room to feel, calm, cosy, dramatic, fresh? That guides my colour and texture choices. Then I look at what’s already in the room and whether the wallpaper needs to tie in or totally transform it. Samples are key! I stick them up and live with them for a few days before deciding.
I Love Wallpaper: What’s your stance on feature walls versus wallpapering an entire room? When do you recommend each approach?
Laura Hamilton: Both can work beautifully. A feature wall is great for adding a focal point, behind a bed, for example, especially if you’re working with a bold print. But wallpapering a whole room in a more subtle texture or tone can create this incredible, immersive feel. I’ve done both in my own homes, depending on the vibe I’m going for.
I Love Wallpaper: Are there any decorating trends you’re particularly excited about right now, or any timeless approaches you always recommend?
Laura Hamilton: I’m loving the return of earthy tones and natural textures, they’re so grounding. And that chocolate brown I mentioned? Very in right now! But no matter the trend, I always recommend focusing on what you love. Decorating should be personal. You can’t go wrong with soft neutrals, layered textures, and pieces that tell a story.
I Love Wallpaper: Beyond wallpaper, what are your top paint colour selection tips to ensure harmony and flow throughout a home?
Laura Hamilton: Stick to a cohesive palette throughout your home, it creates that sense of flow. I usually pick a few core colours and use different shades or tones of those in different rooms. And always test paint in natural and artificial light, it can completely change from morning to evening. Don’t forget the ceilings and woodwork too, a warm white can really soften a space.
