As an expert on property styling and design, Laura knows a thing or two about making a house look its best. In this section of our Q&A, we asked her for her top tips on how to style a home, from decluttering to her "secret weapon" accessories.

Top Tips for Styling a House

I Love Wallpaper: For someone looking to sell their home, what are your top three styling tips to make it appeal to the widest possible audience?

Laura Hamilton: First things first, declutter! Clear the space so potential buyers can imagine themselves living there. Second, go for neutral tones, they help to open up the space and appeal to more people. And third, add subtle, homely touches like fresh flowers, cosy throws, and soft lighting. You want to create a space that feels warm and welcoming without being too personal.

I Love Wallpaper: How do you approach styling a room to make it feel both beautiful and lived-in, rather than just a show home?

Laura Hamilton: It’s all about layers and personality. I like to mix textures, like linen with velvet, or wood with soft rugs and add in items that tell a story. Books, art, a favourite mug on a side table… those little touches bring a room to life. I always say a home shouldn’t just look good, it should feel like you.

I Love Wallpaper: What are some common styling mistakes you see people make, and how can they easily avoid them?

Laura Hamilton: One big mistake is playing it too safe. It’s fine to use neutrals, but don’t be afraid to add interest through pattern, texture, or a pop of colour. Another is poor lighting.  One overhead light just won’t cut it and neither will a ceiling full of spot lights. And finally, don’t cram too much furniture into a space. Let the room breathe.

I Love Wallpaper: In terms of styling, what’s your go-to “secret weapon” or accessory that can instantly elevate a space?

Laura Hamilton: Cushions and throws! They’re such an easy, affordable way to switch up your look. I’m also a huge fan of a statement mirror, it bounces light around and adds a real focal point. Oh, and greenery! A gorgeous plant can lift a room instantly.

I Love Wallpaper: How important is lighting when styling a room, and do you have any quick tips for improving a room’s lighting?

Laura Hamilton: Lighting is everything! It sets the mood and completely changes how a space feels. My quick tip? Use a mix of light sources, overheads, table lamps, wall lights and go for warm bulbs rather than harsh white ones.
